“What came first – the music or the misery? Did I listen to the music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to the music? Do all those records turn you into a melancholy person?” – Nick Hornby

I’ve always been a lyrics person, gravitating towards songwriters and bands who had a knack of telling me a story.  Not to knock on top 40 pop, because the “ooh baby baby’s” and “raise your hands in the air” type songs resonate, however briefly in pop culture conscious, and have their place.  I’ve been sitting back the last few weeks thinking about the songs that resonated with me, and more than l probably want to admit, helped shape my outlook on life, love and music appreciation.  So, let’s get a little personal for a bit,  and let’s look into a few songs, going to let you come to your own impression of me, based on the songs below.

Supertramp – The Logical Song

But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

Changes – David Bowie

Don’t want to be a better man
Time may change me
But I can’t trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But the days still seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through

Shriekback – Cradle Song

May you never know hunger: may you love with a full heart –
The light stay in your eyes…

May the fire be your friend and the sea rock you gently,
May the moon light your way – till the wind sets you free

Grant Lee Buffalo – Honey Don’t Think

Something wrong in my stars
Could you look at my chart
And help me healing these scars

Could you learn to read minds
In the case of mine
Do you read in the dark

Love and Rockets – All In My Mind
Walk around so cold
So cold and lonely
Or lay in bed wondering what
To do with time
You’ve got no sense of fun
Until you know you’ve won again
And yet you feel so much
You feel so much inside
You want to rip all the
Jewels off all the idiots’ backs so badly
You scream give me what I’ve always
Missed, give me a good time
But if you look into your mirror
You’ll see that nobody has ever ripped you off
It’s all in your mind
Her beauty can only ever be skin deep
But if I’m honest that’s all I ever
Really need
So throw us some flowers and we’ll
Give you some songs and sunshine
And if you give me an hour
I’ll show you how you feel
